East Carolina wins with big 8th

GREENVILLE — East Carolina scored six runs in the eighth inning to defeat Virginia Commonwealth 9-3 at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Kirk Morgan (4-0) got the win in relief and also drove in two runs in the Pirates' big frame.

Hunter Allen and Bryce Harman walked to start ECU's half of the eighth. Luke Lowery was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eric Tyler doubled for two RBIs and a 5-3 Pirates lead.

Travis Watkins singled and Charlie Yorgen followed with an RBI single. An error on Yorgen's single to right allowed Lowery to score and extended ECU's advantage to 7-3. Morgan followed with a two-run single to complete the scoring.

Jacob Wolfe started and went five and one-third innings for the Pirates, leaving with a 3-2 lead. He allowed six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out four.

Joe Ingle pitched two-thirds of an inning, yielding one hit and striking out one. The Rams scored the tying run in the seventh off of Morgan, who gave up one hit and fanned four in three innings.

Jackson Mims went 2-for-4 for ECU with a pair of RBIs.

VCU (10-10) outhit the Pirates 8-6 but committed seven errors to two for the Pirates (16-7).

The Rams had won five straight in the series, including a 4-3 victory on Friday.

ECU evened the three-game series at a win apiece with the deciding game at 1 p.m. today.
