Pirates post pair of shutouts

GREENVILLE — East Carolina recorded a
pair of shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth on Saturday at
Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Sophomore left-hander Evan Kruczynski
pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game and the Pirates scored twice
in the eighth inning for a 2-0 win.
The offense came alive much earlier
in the second game as ECU scored six times in the first inning en route
to a 9-0 victory.
Jacob Wolfe, Luke Bolka, Nick Durazo
and Cameron Snow combined for the shutout in the second game.
Kruczynski threw 97 pitches, 72 for
strikes. He walked one and struck out seven.
The Pirates scored twice in the
eighth inning in the first game. Eric Tyler singled to center field with
one out and Parker Lamm pinch ran for him. Bryce Harman singled to left
field and a throwing error by the left fielder allowed Lamm to come home
with the game's first run. Harman went to second on the miscue and took
third when Travis Watkins singled through the left side. A fielder's
choice by Garrett Brooks that retired Watkins at second allowed Harman
to come home.
Watkins went 2-for-4 as the Pirates
collected nine hits, all singles.
ECU (8-5) outhit the Hawks (0-8) by a
15-3 margin in the second game.
Reid Love led off the bottom of the
first frame with a home run to left field to set the tone. Tyler and
Harman followed with singles before Travis Watkins singled to score
Tyler. Jackson Mims and Charlie Yorgen had RBI singles. Brooks drove in
two runs with a single to center field.
Tyler doubled in the second inning
and scored on a hit by Harman for a 7-0 lead.
ECU added two unearned runs in the
fourth as Tyler, Mims and Yorgen had singles. Monmouth had an error and
a wild pitch.
Tyler and Mims finished the second
game with three hits each. Harman, Yorgen and Brooks had two hits
apiece.
Wolfe started and went six innings.
He allowed three hits and struck out six. Bolka, Durazo and Snow pitched
one inning each and didn't allow a hit. Bolka and Durazo each had one
whiff. Snow struck out the side in the ninth.
A 1 p.m. game today will complete the
nonconference series.
