Pack shuts out Pirates

RALEIGH — N.C. State's Logan Ratledge
hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning on Tuesday
afternoon and the Wolfpack went on to deal East Carolina its first
shutout of the season by a 7-0 margin at Doak Field.
Ratledge had a sacrifice fly and
Preston Palmeiro had an RBI double as State (6-3) extended its lead to
4-0 in the seventh.
A two-run double by Joe Dunand
brought in two more runs for the Pack in the eighth and Jake Armstrong
also had a run-scoring two-bagger in the eighth.
Jimmy Boyd (1-2) went six innings for
ECU (5-5), yielding the dinger by Ratledge on an 0-1 pitch. He allowed
six hits, walked one and struck out one.
Curt Britt (1-0) went one and
one-third innings in relief for the win.
Six State pitchers combined for 10
strikeouts while issuing three walks.
The Pack pushed its lead in the
series to 69-40. East Carolina hosts NCSU on April 21 at 6:30 p.m.
The hosts outhit the Pirates, 9-5.
ECU was led by a 2-for-4 effort from Travis Watkins.
Charlie Yorgen (double), Hunter Allen
(double) and Garrett Brooks also had hits for the Pirates, who stranded
nine baserunners.
Bryce Harman was hit by pitches
twice.
ECU committed one error. Five of
State's runs were earned.
The outcome halted a four-game
winning streak for the Pirates as State improved to 4-0 at home.
The contest started in light rain
with a temperature of 40 degrees. The first pitch was thrown at 3:01
p.m. The start time was moved up due to the forecast.
Warmer weather is expected this
afternoon as ECU is home to face Old Dominion (2-4) in a make-up game at
4 p.m.
