ESTERO, FL — Short-handed East Carolina opened play in the Gulf Coast Showcase at high noon on Monday and was dealt a 66-49 setback by Green Bay.

The Pirates were without versatile senior wing man Paris Roberts-Campbell due to a knee ailment and post player Marshall Guilmette because of a hip flexor injury.

Florida State transfer Terry Whisnant did his best to offset the absences as he made nine of 17 shots from the floor to lead all scorers with 23 points.

The Phoenix (2-1) held a 37-23 advantage in rebounding and scored 22 points following offensive rebounds.

The Pirates (2-2) experienced a slow start, missing their first 13 field goal attempts to fall behind, 17-3.

Prince Williams broke the cold spell with a 3-pointer with 12:12 left in the first half.

Greg Mays had 15 points and six rebounds for Green Bay. Keifer Sykes finished with 12 points and five assists.

The largest lead for the Phoenix came after a 3-pointer by Carrington Love pushed the margin to 21 points early in the second half.

Green Bay was ahead 36-23 at the half.

The Pirates have another noon tipoff today, meeting Fresno State (1-3). The Bulldogs were topped 58-52 by Evansville on Monday.
