GREENVILLE — A double-double by Manny
Atkins helped Georgia State to an 89-82 win over East Carolina at
Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
Atkins had 27 points and 12 rebounds
for the Panthers (7-6). Akeem Richmond led a balanced attack for ECU
(10-4) with 21 points.
Ryan Harrow, who started his college
career at N.C. State before transferring to Kentucky and then to Georgia
State, had 24 points and nine assists.
"Harrow just took over the second
half and you can tell why he was a top 20 player in the country, why he
went to N.C. State and started at Kentucky," said Pirates coach Jeff
Lebo. "He wasn't going to let them lose."
R.J. Hunter added 22 points for the
Panthers, who led 35-27 at the half.
Georgia State was up by as many as 14
points in the first half but ECU rallied for its final lead at 48-47 on
a pair of free throws by Caleb White with 14:35 left to play.
Harrow responded with a go-ahead
jumper that sparked a 9-0 run by the Panthers. ECU got no closer than
five points the rest of the way.
Georgia State made 34 of 66 field
goal attempts for 51.5 percent. Atkins, a 6-feet, 6-inch senior who
played two seasons at Virginia Tech, made 11 of 14 from the floor
including two of four behind the arc.
Richmond dropped seven of 18 from
long distance.
A crowd of 4,309 saw Prince Williams
add 18 points and dish out seven assists. Michael Zangari scored 16
points. White finished with 13 points and Paris Roberts-Campbell tallied
10. Brandan Stith grabbed 12 rebounds. Antonio Robinson had six assists.
The Pirates lost consecutive games
for the first time this season and will try to snap the streak at
Campbell on Thursday night at 7.
