GREENVILLE — East Carolina rolled
past Division II Chowan for a 95-45 basketball win on Thursday night in
Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum as coach Jeff Lebo made extensive use
of his bench and six Pirates scored in double figures.
Akeem Richmond led ECU (3-0) with 15
points on 5-of-13 shooting behind the arc. Richmond did not attempt a
two-point field goal or a free throw.
Richmond's three free throws with 1.2
seconds remaining lifted the Pirates to
an 85-84 win at UNC-Greensboro
on Tuesday night.
Freshman Caleb White had 13 points,
making all five of his field goal tries, including a pair of threes.
Petar Torlak, Brandan Stith and Greg
Alexander had 11 points each for ECU. Marshall Guilmette scored 10.
Stith had 15 rebounds in a team-high
26 minutes for a double-double.
Michael Zangari and Antonio Robinson
each finished with nine rebounds. Prince Williams, Paris
Roberts-Campbell and Robinson each collected five assists for the
Pirates.
Phoenix Butler-Poole led Chowan (0-1)
with 11 points.
The officiating crew included
well-known referee Ted Valentine.
ECU outrebounded the smaller Hawks,
59-27. The Pirates had eight turnovers.
ECU made 17 of 35 from the floor in
each half to finish 34 for 70 for 48.6 percent. The Pirates were 11 of
26 from long range for 42.3 percent.
ECU built a 9-0 lead to open the
game. The Pirates led 45-25 at the half and outscored the visitors 50-20
after the break.
"It was a good win," Lebo said. "I
thought defensively we were pretty alert for most of the game, holding
them to 26 percent (17 for 64).
"We knew they would come in and be
able to shoot the ball in five spots, and that's pretty hard to defend.
I didn't go to the small lineup until the second half because I wanted
to see the big guys try to defend it a little bit.
"But I thought our best lineup in
this game was when we went little. We had nice balance again tonight. We
missed a lot of easy shots, and when we showed up against Greensboro we
missed a lot of easy ones. We've got to learn to be able to finish on
balance with some contact. That's something we need to do because it
will be harder to finish in our next couple of games."
ECU plays Norfolk State at Duke at
9:30 p.m. on Monday in the first round of the NIT Tipoff Tournament. The
winner of that game plays the winner of the preceding contest between
the Blue Devils and UNC-Asheville on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. The losers of
Monday night's games will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
