Pirates roll in hoops opener

GREENVILLE — East Carolina opened its 2013-14 basketball season at home before a crowd of 5,345 in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum with a 97-51 win over North Carolina Wesleyan.

Paris Roberts-Campbell had 21 points for the Pirates to lead all scorers. Roberts-Campbell made eight of 14 field goal attempts, including three of seven behind the arc and dropped both of his free throws. He also had four steals, two assists and blocked one shot.

Akeem Richmond, who made the three-pointer that brought the 2012-13 season to a close with a 77-74 win at Weber State in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship, added 15 points.

Freshmen Caleb White and Bandan Stith scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Marshall Guilmette and Stith grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds as ECU led 50-31 on the boards against the smaller Bishops (0-1).

Guard Josh Morrison led the visitors with 12 points and Devon Weaver tallied 10.

The Pirates' field goal shooting warmed up after intermission. ECU made 22 of 34 field goal attempts in the second half for 64.7 percent, including seven of 11 on 3-pointers (63.6 percent).

Point guards Prince Williams and Antonio Robinson combined for 11 assists.

ECU won its 13th straight season opener and prevailed in its home opener for the 11th straight time.

The Pirates are 7-0 under fourth-year coach Jeff Lebo when scoring 90 or more points.

ECU visits UNC-Greensboro on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
