Golden Eagles top ECU, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, MS — Southern Miss scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 win over East Carolina in a Conference USA elimination game Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.

David Lucroy (2-6) took the loss for the Pirates (33-26). Lucroy went three and one-third innings. He allowed five hits and three runs, all earned. Lucroy issued three walks without a strikeout.

Ryan Williams pitched five innings and yielded three hits but no runs. He struck out two without a walk. Drew Reynolds fanned the two batters he faced in the ninth.

Dylan Burdeaux walked on four pitches to lead off the fourth inning for Southern Miss (34-24). He moved to second on a wild pitch. Austin Roussel singled to right field to move Burdeaux to third. Roussel stole second.

A single up the middle by Michael Gilbert gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Williams relieved Lucroy before a single up the middle by Nick Dawson scored Gilbert for a 3-0 USM advantage.

Williams started a double play to get out of the inning.

Ian Townsend tripled into the right center gap in the fifth and scored on a ground out by Garrett Brooks to draw the Pirates within 3-1.

Hunter Allen was 2-for-3 as ECU managed five hits. Gilbert and Roussell each finished 2-for-4 for USM.

Cameron Giannini (5-2) pitched a complete game for Southern Miss. He allowed five hits and one earned run while walking three and striking out five.

The Golden Eagles must beat Texas-San Antonio twice today to reach the 2 p.m. championship game on Sunday.

Old Dominion edged Middle Tennessee State 2-1 on Friday to eliminate the Blue Raiders.

The Monarchs need two wins today over regular season champion Rice to play in Sunday's title game.
