HATTIESBURG, MS — Luke Lowery won the deciding game in
the East Carolina-Southern Miss series. For the Pirates, it was the wrong
Luke Lowery.
The Golden Eagles' Lowery held ECU in check for one and
one-third innings Sunday as the hosts scored lone runs in the seventh and
eighth innings for a 6-4 victory.
The outcome handed USM (30-22, 17-10 C-USA) the series
two games to one.
The Pirates (29-23, 14-13) battled back to tie the score
at 4 in the top of the seventh after falling behind 4-1 through two innings
of play.
The Golden Eagles built the early lead against starter
David Lucroy and Nick Durazo. Brett Mabry pitched six effective innings but
took the loss to fall to 4-3.
Lowery moved to 4-0 for USM.
Dylan Brown doubled down the right field line for ECU in
the second and scored to cut the deficit to 2-1 when Hunter Allen reached on
an error.
Drew Reynolds and Zach Houchins singled for ECU with one
out in the seventh before Ian Townsend walked to load the bases.
A single by Brown off of Lowery brought in two runs to
get the Pirates within 4-3. A sacrifice fly by Bryce Harman tied the score.
Southern Miss got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the
seventh after Connor Barron led off with a double. Michael Sterling's bunt
moved him to third and Matt Durst's ground out to second brought him home.
Brown had two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates. Reynolds
and Houchins also had two hits for ECU, which outhit USM 10-6 in the series
finale.
The Golden Eagles had three of the game's five double
plays.The Pirates left 11 runners on base.
ECU starts a four-game home stand that will conclude the
regular season next week with a 6 p.m. matchup Tuesday against High Point.
The Conference USA Tournament starts May 21 at Southern
Miss.
