Pirates take series with MTSU

GREENVILLE  — East Carolina won the second game of its doubleheader with Middle Tennessee State on Friday 5-1 to take the Conference USA series two games to one.

The Pirates bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the first game as Tyler Bolton (2-3) went five and two-thirds scoreless innings before Ryan Williams pitched the rest of the way for his fifth save.

ECU (24-16, 11-7 C-USA) scored three runs in the third and added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings in the second game.

A walk to Kirk Morgan started the Pirates in the third. Drew Reynolds had a two-out single down the right field line before Zach Houchins hit a three-run homer to left.

Bryce Harman walked for ECU in the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch. Houchins singled in the seventh and later came home on a wild pitch.

Houchins went 3-for-4 in the second game with three RBIs. Reynolds went 2-for-4.

Bolton and Williams each allowed three hits.

Jared Allen hit two homers for MTSU (19-21, 9-9) in the first game. He finished 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs with two runs scored.

Allen's two-out, two-run blast in the top of the first inning put the Blue Raiders ahead 2-0 and MTSU maintained the lead.

Trent Miller also homered and Ryan Stephens went 3-for-5 in the Blue Raiders win.

Brett Mabry (3-1) absorbed the loss for the Pirates. Reynolds led ECU at the plate with a 2-for 4 effort.

The Pirates have added a non-conference home game with Old Dominion at 6 p.m. Monday.
