Pack holds off Pirates

RALEIGH — East Carolina trailed 3-0 going to the
top of the ninth inning at N.C. State on Wednesday night before the Pirates
scored two runs and left the bases loaded in a 3-2 nonconference loss.
ECU (17-12) tried to extend a seven-game winning streak
in its final at-bat.
Luke Lowery singled up the middle with one out and
freshman Charlie Yorgen had a base hit down the right field line that moved
Lowery to third. An RBI single through the right side by Garrett Brooks got
the Pirates on the board.
Dylan Brown singled through the right side with two out
to score Yorgen. Drew Reynolds was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a
Zach Houchins fly out to diving State center fielder Jake Fincher ended the
game.
The Wolfpack (17-11) scored lone runs in the third,
fourth and seventh innings.
Preston Palmiero tripled for the Wolfpack in the third
and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett Austin.
Palmiero had an RBI single in the fourth. Austin tripled
in the seventh and was awarded home as the throw to third went out of play.
Tyler Bolton (1-3) absorbed the loss for the Pirates,
working into the fourth and yielding two earned runs. He walked one and
struck out two.
Ryan Williams pitched four innings. He allowed four hits
and an unearned run while recording one strikeout. Luke Bolka, Brett Mabry
and Reynolds pitched in the eighth for ECU.
Ryan Williamson (1-0) got the win in middle relief for
State.
Reynolds, Lowery and Yorgen had two hits each for ECU,
which outhit the hosts, 11-8.
The Pirates start a three-game Conference USA series at
Rice on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Owls are ranked No. 14 nationally in the
CollegeBaseballInsider.com composite poll. A 5-2 home loss to No. 9 Texas on
Tuesday dropped Rice to 21-10.
ECU will host State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
