CHARLOTTE — East Carolina won both ends of a
doubleheader at Charlotte on Saturday to sweep a three-game Conference USA
series from the 49ers.
ECU (13-11, 6-3 C-USA) won the first game 8-5 as Ben
Fultz had three hits and four RBIs. The Pirates won the second game 5-2 as
David Lucroy (1-3) went seven innings and allowed just one hit.
Fultz had five hits and seven RBIs for the day.
The teams played two games Saturday because of the threat
of unsuitable weather Sunday.
ECU rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the first game.
T.J. Nichting had a run-scoring double off of Pirate
starter Reid Love in Charlotte's five-run eruption in the bottom of the
fourth and Logan Sherer followed with a two-run double.
Mabry managed to halt the uprising and ECU responded with
five runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score.
Hunter Allen, Zach Houchins, Bryce Harman, Fultz (double)
and Luke Lowery had hits in ECU's big frame.
The Pirates added lone runs in the seventh, eighth and
ninth, outhitting their hosts, 13-9.
Drew Reynolds picked up his fourth save with two and
two-thirds innings on the mound.
Consecutive singles by Townsend, Harman and Fultz
resulted in the go-ahead run for the Pirates.
Reynolds had an RBI single in the eighth and Eric Tyler
had a run-scoring hit up the middle in the ninth.
In the second game, Lucroy struck out five and walked on.
Jacob Wolfe yielded two runs (one earned) before Ryan Williams pitched the
last one and one-third for his second save of the season.
ECU scored three runs in the first and added two more in
the third in the last game of the series.
Fultz had a two-run triple in the first and an RBI double
in the third.
The Pirates host UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
