Tulane takes series opener

GREENVILLE — Tulane defeated host East Carolina 7-2
on Friday evening in the first game of a three-game Conference USA series on
Friday.
Due to the threat of unsuitable weather on Sunday, the
teams have adjusted the schedule to finish the series with a doubleheader
today beginning at 1 p.m.
The Green Wave led 3-0 before scoring four runs in the
seventh. Richard Carthon and Stephen Alemais had hits as Tulane (10-6, 3-1)
pushed its lead to 7-0.
ECU (8-10, 1-3 C-USA) responded with a pair of runs in
the bottom of the seventh as Drew Reynolds and Zach Houchins had RBIs.
Jeff Hoffman (0-3) pitched six and one-third innings. He
allowed seven hits, six runs (five earned) and had five strikeouts while
walking two. Nick Durazo was charged with the Wave's final run. Freshman
Davis Kirkpatrick checked Tulane with no hits and no runs over the last two
and two-thirds innings.
Reynolds was 3-for-5 at the plate as ECU outhit the
visitors, 11-7. Hunter Allen was 3-for-4. Houchins went 2-for-5.
The Pirates committed three errors while the Wave had
one.
Tyler Mapes gave up eight hits over five innings for the
win but kept ECU scoreless. Kyle McKenzie struck out five over the last four
innings and picked up the save.
ECU's probable starter for the first game today is
left-hander Reid Love, who has a 1-1 record with a 1.17 earned run average.
The Pirates are expected to go with right-hander Brett Mabry (1-0, 1.12) for
the second game of the doubleheader.
