Miners dominate on boards, top ECU

GREENVILLE — Texas-El Paso used its
size advantage to outrebound East Carolina 42-17 on Thursday night as
the Miners took a 58-47 Conference USA basketball win in Williams Arena
at Minges Coliseum.
UTEP (17-6, 7-1 C-USA) got 15 points
and three assists from C.J. Cooper. Julian Washburn, the son of former
N.C. State player Chris Washburn, added 14 points with his dad looking
on. John Bohannon had 12 point and 14 rebounds for coach Tim Floyd's
club.
The Pirates led 11-4 on Caleb White's
layup with 14:10 to go in the first half. The Miners responded with an
11-0 run and maintained the upper hand the rest of the way after a
jumper by Cedric Lang put the visitors ahead 12-11 with 10:43 left in
the first half.
UTEP had a 27-18 lead at the half.
The Pirates started the second half
on a 10-5 run to pull within 32-28 on one of six 3-pointers on the night
by Akeem Richmond.
The Miners subsequently expanded the
second half lead to 13 points.
Richmond made six of 10 behind the
arc to lead ECU with 20 points. Paris Roberts-Campbell had 12 points.
Prince Williams came off the bench to add eight points. Brandan Stith
contributed a team-high five rebounds in a reserve role.
The Pirates made nine of 20 3-point
attempts for 45 percent but just four of eight free throws (50 percent).
ECU converted 17 of 48 field goal attempts overall for 35.4 percent.
UTEP made 26 of 50 field goal tries
for 52 percent.
The Miners visit Old Dominion on
Saturday. ECU hosts Texas-San Antonio at 5 p.m. Saturday. The
Roadrunners lost 69-61 at ODU on Thursday night.
