MIAMI, FL — East Carolina was topped
68-64 in a Conference USA basketball contest at Florida International on
Saturday as the Pirates made just one of 11 attempts from behind the
3-point arc in the second half.
ECU led 37-33 at intermission as
Prince Williams dropped a three from the right corner at the buzzer.
Pirate freshman Caleb White tied the score at 51 with a jumper with
11:45 left before a layup by Rakeem Buckles put the Panthers in front to
stay at 53-51 with 11:19 to go.
Buckles had two free throws with
seven seconds remaining to finish with 18 points. He also collected 11
rebounds and made four steals for the Panthers (10-9, 2-2 C-USA).
Paris Roberts-Campbell had 15 points,
seven assists and three steals for ECU (11-7, 0-3) before fouling out
with 26 seconds to go. Michael Zangari had 14 points before he fouled
out. White had 11 points. Antonio Robinson scored 10 points and had four
assists before he exited on fouls.
Foul problems have been a concern for
ECU coach Jeff Lebo because of a limited playing rotation.
The Pirates were 14 of 24 on free
throws for 58.3 percent.
Florida International hit 16 of 27
field goal attempts in the second half for 59.3 percent. The Panthers
finished at 52.2 percent (24 of 46) from the floor for the game.
ECU trailed 66-64 when Akeem Richmond
missed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left.
Richmond was 3-for-9 behind the arc
and had nine points.
The Pirates will seek to regroup for
a 7 p.m. game Thursday night with Tulane in Williams Arena at Minges
Coliseum.
