Trabanino has Pirates' number

HATTIESBURG, MS — Nolan Trabanino did it to East Carolina
again.
The sophomore left-hander from Texas-San Antonio pitched
seven and one-third innings in Greenville in a 2-1 Roadrunners win on May
16.
East Carolina saw him again in its second game of the
2014 Conference USA Tournament with similar lack of success.
Trabanino pitched eight innings against the Pirates on
Thursday night at Pete Taylor Park and allowed four hits while striking out
eight in an 8-3 UTSA win.
The Pirates play host Southern Miss again in an
elimination game at 7:30 tonight.
ECU
edged the Golden Eagles 9-8 in 11 innings
on Wednesday night.
The Roadrunners, who
lost a
league series to the Pirates two games to one last week,
jumped out to a 6-0 lead through their first three turns at the plate on
Thursday night.
ECU (33-25) mustered a run in the third and scored twice
in the eighth after UTSA (34-24) had pushed its lead to 8-1 in the sixth.
Charlie Yorgen was 2-for-4 to lead the Pirates
offensively. ECU was outhit 12-4. Drew Reynolds and Zach Houchins also had
hits for the Pirates.
Tyler Bolton (2-5) ran into trouble early, allowing four
hits and four runs (three earned) in an inning of work.
Brett Mabry provided five innings of relief. He yielded
six hits and four runs (three earned) while walking two and striking out
four.
Jacob Wolfe (one and one-third innings) and Hayden White
(one and two thirds) held UTSA scoreless to close the game.
Hunter Allen walked and Eric Tyler reached on an error
for ECU in the third. Yorgen's single put runners at second and third before
a sacrifice fly by Reynolds brought the Pirates within 6-1.
Yorgen singled up the middle to lead off the eighth.
Reynolds singled to center field and a UTSA error on the play put runners at
second and third. A grounder to second by Zach Houchins brought Yorgen home
and Dylan Brown's sacrifice fly to center brought in Reynolds with the
game's final run.
In other tournament games Thursday, regular season
champion Rice remained unbeaten in the event by defeating Middle Tennessee
State, 8-2.
In elimination games, Southern Miss nipped
Alabama-Birmingham, 4-3, and Old Dominion sent Florida International home,
3-2.
ODU plays Middle Tennessee in an elimination contest at 4
p.m. today.
The ODU-MTSU winner will have to top Rice twice on
Saturday for a berth in Sunday's 2 p.m. championship game, which is to be
televised on the CBS Sports Network.
The ECU-USM survivor will have to beat UTSA twice on
Saturday as well for a berth in the final.
