CHAPEL HILL — East Carolina left-hander Reid Love
got the only run he needed in a 1-0 win at North Carolina on Tuesday night
as freshman Charlie Yorgen's single up the middle scored Garrett Brooks in
the top of the seventh inning.
Love (4-3) scattered five hits and struck out seven
without a walk in a nine-inning effort that produced ECU's second one-run
win over the Tar Heels in a week.
The Pirates (28-18) followed up on
a 3-2
triumph over their in-state rivals on April 22 despite
leaving 12 men on base.
Brooks led off the seventh with a single up the middle
and the Heels pulled starting pitcher Taylore Cherry for Trevor Kelley. A
sacrifice bunt by Hunter Allen moved Brooks to second base. Yorgen connected
with a 1-1 pitch for the game's only run.
Love threw 113 pitches, 79 for strikes. He retired the
Heels (27-19) in order in the ninth to halt a four-game winning streak for
the hosts.
A crowd of 720 was on hand at Boshamer Stadium as severe
weather moved across portions of eastern North Carolina.
Luke Lowery caught the shutout and went 3-for-3 at the
plate. Getting two hits each were Yorgen, Zach Houchins and Brooks.
All of the Pirates' base knocks were singles. Adrian
Chacon's two-out double in the bottom of the fifth was the game's only extra
base hit.
ECU hosts Florida International (30-12, 11-10) in a
Conference USA series that starts Friday at 6 p.m. The Pirates take a 13-8
league record into the three-game set with the Panthers.
Games with FIU are presently scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Saturday (Fox Sports Networks) and 1 p.m. Sunday. The Panthers have a
four-game winning streak after taking a nonconference series with St.
Peter's in Miami.
