Bowl week shifts to the main event

By Brian Bailey

WNCT-TV 9 Sports Director Brian Bailey is on the scene in New Orleans, bringing daily coverage of bowl week to Bonesville's readers and Channel 9's viewers. The week climaxes on Saturday with East Carolina's R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl showdown against Louisiana-Lafayette.

NEW ORLEANS — Over one thousand people were on hand for Friday's R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl luncheon held at the Marriott.

The East Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette teams were welcomed in by their respective bands, making for exciting but noisy entrances. The Pirates were introduced first and were followed by the Ragin' Cajuns.

The Pirates seemed like a relaxed group at the event. I think many of them, like me, are ready to play this football game and then get back home. East Carolina continues as just less than a touchdown underdog in the contest.

Both teams' practices were closed at the Superdome on Friday. There were also no interviews allowed as is normally the case for an East Carolina game week. While the teams were in meetings Friday night, many fans enjoyed a free concert featuring Bad Company and the Beach Boys.

Finally, bowl week is almost complete in New Orleans. The Pirates will now go after their first bowl victory since the win over Boise State in the Hawaii Bowl in 2007.
