The extra-inning magic ran out for East
Carolina on Saturday as Garrett Cannizaro's RBI single in the bottom of the
12th lifted Tulane to a 5-4 Conference USA victory over the Pirates at
Turchin Stadium.
The outcome reversed the trend ECU established
with triumphs in its two most recent marathon outings. The Pirates
prevailed over the Green Wave 3-2 in 13 innings
Friday night after
having pulled out a similar 13-inning thriller
by an identical score over Rice last weekend.
Brandon Boudreaux walked to lead off the
decisive inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tucker Oakley.
Boudreaux advanced to third on a passed ball charged to ECU catcher Travis
Watkins and made an unfettered transit to home plate when Cannizaro banged
his walk-off single to left field.
ECU came back from a 4-2 deficit with a pair
of scores in the 7th to set the stage for extra innings. Watkins, whose
one-out walk got the rally going, raced to third on Bryan Bass's double and
came home on Jack Reinheimer's groundout. Drew Reynolds then singled up the
middle to drive Bass home.
Tulane closer Kyle McKenzie (2-1) hurled 4 2/3
scoreless innings to pick up the win.
ECU reliever Brett Mabry (1-2) absorbed the
loss despite giving up only one run on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. The one
score, however, was the one that decided the outcome. Mabry took over for
starter David Lucroy to start the 7th with the game knotted at 4-4.
Reynolds led the Pirates offensively with 4
hits in 6 at bats with a run scored and an RBI.
Cannizaro was among four players with two hits
for the Wave.
During the course of the contest, errors were
charged against ECU third baseman Zach Houchins, outfielder Dylan Brown and
Mabry.
Tulane committed no miscues.
The teams will settle the series on Sunday at
noon.
