Rice erupted for five runs in the sixth inning
and added two more in the seventh to overcome deficits and capture an 8-7
Conference USA victory over East Carolina Sunday morning at Clark-LeClair
Stadium.
With the win, the Owls (23-11, 6-3 C-USA)
claimed the weekend series two games to one. The Pirates had squared the
series with
a 13-inning, 3-2 triumph on Saturday
after Rice
took Friday's series opener 3-0.
Junior designated hitter Michael Aquino paced
the Owls offensively with a pair of doubles, including a two-bagger in the
top of the seventh that drove in two runs for the final 8-7 margin.
The highlight of ECU's attack was junior
outfielder Dylan Brown's three-run home in the bottom of the second that
gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
Rice reliever Zech Lemond (4-1), a sophomore
righthander, got credit for the victory after blanking ECU on four hits over
the final 3 2/3 innings.
Jake Harris (1-3) logged the final three
innings for ECU and was charged with the loss. The senior southpaw
surrendered four hits and the decisive run.
ECU (15-17, 1-5 C-USA) will bus to Raleigh on
Tuesday to face N.C. State at 6 p.m. The Wolfpack
defeated the Pirates 6-1 last
Tuesday in Greenville.
