Regular Saturday ace Ryan Williams came to the
rescue for East Carolina Wednesday evening, hurling 4 1/3 perfect innings
and giving the Pirates a chance to complete an 11-4 comeback victory over
Elon at Latham Park.
Junior first baseman Chase McDonald belted a
pair of home runs and senior third baseman/outfielder Jay Cannon and senior
second baseman Bryan Bass also knocked round-trippers as ECU overcame a 4-2
deficit to snap a six-game losing streak.
The Pirates improved to 12-14 with the
victory, while Elon fell to 14-11.
Sophomore leftfielder Blaine Bower had
three-run homer in the bottom of the second that gave the Phoenix a 4-2 lead
that lasted until Cannon pulled ECU even with a two-run blast in the fifth.
With the score knotted, Williams, a junior
righthander, took over the Pirate pitching chores from freshman lefthander
Nick Durazo with two outs in the fifth and a runner on third.
Williams proceeded to retire the next 13
batters while the Pirates scored three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh
and three more in the ninth to nail down the badly needed triumph.
Junior pinch-hitter/third baseman Zach
Houchins helped ECU's cause by going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, including a
two-run double in the sixth that gave the Pirates the lead for good.
ECU will try to get a winning streak going
when it hosts North Carolina Central on Friday at 6 p.m.
