Pirates charge back to advance in CIT

Post-game audio: Miguel Paul picked a good time to find his shooting eye in East Carolina's game against visiting Savannah State Tuesday night. The senior point guard nailed a three off an assist from Akeem Richmond with 47 seconds left to give ECU its first lead. Thirty-four seconds later, Paul hit a decisive pair of free throws to help the Pirates capture a 66-65 comeback victory in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Richmond, a junior guard, sealed the triumph when he planted his hand on the ball as SSU senior forward Rashad Hassen tried to get off a last second shot. Paul, who made only 2-of-8 field goal attempts, scored 8 of ECU's final 12 points as the Pirates put the finishing touches on a remarkable rally that overcame a double-digit lead held by SSU during much of the second half. After jumping out front on a trey by junior guard Deven Williams in the game's first minute, the Tigers led the entire first half and built 15-point advantages on two occasions in the final frame before ECU began its charge. Maurice Kemp, a first-team All-Conference USA stalwart, was the Pirates' offensive catalyst. The senior forward led all scorers with 21 points and had 6 assists and a game-high 4 steals. Richmond, who has excelled in his role as ECU's sixth man, came off the bench to fire in four threes and score 14 points. Paul finished with 10 points and junior forward Robert Sampson had 9 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Williams scored 18 points and senior forward Louis Arnold had 15 to pace Savannah State (19-15). The outcome marked ECU's first postseason win since joining the Division I ranks in 1965-66 and assured the Pirates a host spot in the CIT second round.
