Host and No. 5 seed Tulsa
went on a 16-7 run in the final three minutes to capture a
come-from-behind 79-72 victory over No. 4 seed East Carolina in a
Conference USA Tournament quarterfinal matchup Thursday night at the BOK
Center.
Senior guard Scottie
Haralson scored 22 points and freshman guard James Woodard added 17 to
help the Golden Hurricane secure a Friday evening semifinal date with
top seed Memphis (6:30 p.m.; TV: CBSCS). The Tigers took care of Tulane
81-68 in Thursday evening's preliminary contest.
The turning point in
Tulsa's surge past the Pirates occurred when the Golden Hurricane
retained possession on an awkwardly-contested offensive rebound after
Woodard missed back-to-back chances at the charity stripe with 2:52
remaining.
After the second miss,
Tulsa worked the ball to Pat Swilling, Jr., who nailed a long-range bomb
with 2:35 left to convert a 65-63 deficit into a 66-65 lead.
In post-game remarks, ECU
coach Jeff Lebo pointed to the sequence of events as being pivotal in
the outcome.
"They missed two foul
shots, we had a chance to secure a loose ball that we have in our hands
and they
make a three," he said. "That took the juice right out of us and got
them on a run in the last two minutes of the game.”
The run to which Lebo
alluded began with a 10-0 streak in a span of two minutes that put the
Golden Hurricane in control 73-65 with 51 seconds left.
Senior forward Maurice
Kemp had 24 points and 11 rebounds, junior guard Akeem Richmond had 16
points, senior point guard Miguel Paul contributed 14 points and 8
assists and sophomore guard Paris Roberts-Campbell recorded 12 points to
pace the Pirates.
Freshman guard Shaquille
Harrison had 12 points and freshman forward D'Andre Wright scored 10
points for the youth-dominated Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa led by as much as 8
in the first half but Richmond and Kemp fueled a 24-11 run that pushed
the Pirates ahead 30-25 at the half. ECU built the margin to as much as
8 in the second half and did not trail until the final 2:35.
No. 2 seed Southern Miss
will face No. 3 seed Texas-El Paso Friday afternoon (4 p.m.; TV: CBSSN)
for the right to meet the Memphis-Tulsa winner in Saturday's
championship game (11:30 a.m.; TV: CBS).
Out of the running for
C-USA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and not considered a
contender for a bid to the NIT, ECU will be watching national
developments closely over the final weekend of league tourneys to gauge
its merits for a postseason berth in the CIT (CollegeInsider.com
Tournament) or the CBI (College Basketball Invitational).
