East Carolina pitcher David Lucroy got the
kinks out of his system early against Monmouth Sunday afternoon.
After issuing a walk, making a throwing error,
hitting a batter and uncorking a wild pitch in the first inning, the
redshirt freshman righthander had the Hawks' number and proceeded to hurl a
complete game 4-0 victory at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Lucroy got out of the first inning jam with a
strikeout and a groundout and was virtually unhittable the rest of the way,
recording 12 KOs in a two-hit masterpiece. Once the wobbly start was behind
him, he allowed only two MU batters to reach base, both on singles.
The Umatilla, FL, product got all the
offensive support he needed in the bottom of the opening frame when junior
outfielder Dylan Brown drove in senior second baseman Bryan Bass with a
sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Bass had reached on a walk and advanced to
third on junior designated hitter Drew Reynolds' single.
As Lucroy kept the Hawks' batters off balance
inning after inning, ECU (9-5) added insurance runs in the second, fourth
and eighth to ensure the win and capture the series. The Pirates
defeated MU 7-6 on Saturday after
losing the Friday opener 4-3 in 10 innings.
Lucroy improved to 2-1 with the victory.
Monmouth starter Jonathan Shippee (0-2) took
the loss. The senior righthander gave up five hits, walked two and was
charged with three runs during his three-inning stint.
ECU outfielder Chris Gosik had a game-high two
hits, both doubles and both ultimately involved in scores.
Gosik's second inning double-bagger led to a
run when he advanced to third on a groundout and was driven in by freshman
catcher Travis Watkins' sacrifice fly.
Gosik's fourth inning double followed a single
by senior third baseman Jay Cannon, advancing Cannon to third. Cannon
reached home on a throwing error by MU freshman leftfielder Casey Saverio.
The Pirates' final score came in the eighth
when Brown tripled and raced to the plate two batters later on a wild pitch.
Monmouth fell to 3-7 with the loss.
Next up for the Pirates is a
Tuesday home game with Old Dominion (5 p.m.).
