The Camels built a 3-0 lead on runs in the
third, fourth and fifth and never trailed in improving to 2-1. The outcome
left the Pirates winless after three games.
Middle reliever Logan Self (1-0) got credit
for the victory. The senior righthander struck out one and gave up a hit, a
walk and no runs in two innings of work after taking over for starter Matt
Marksberry in the fifth.
Senior righthander Andy Smithmyer (0-1)
started for East Carolina and took the loss. Smithmyer went five innings,
fanning five and surrendering three runs on five hits and two walks.
Smithmyer also hit a batter.
Junior shortstop Jack Reinheimer went 4-for-5
and scored a run to highlight the Pirates' offensive effort.
East Carolina now turns its focus to a 5 p.m.
Thursday matchup with Illinois in the Keith LeClair Classic at Clark-LeClair
Stadium. The annual invitational event will pit the host Pirates against New
Mexico State on Friday (5 p.m.) and Boston College on Saturday (2 p.m.).
