Senior forward Maurice
Kemp had 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to help East Carolina
sail away from North Carolina Wesleyan 91-60 Saturday evening in
Greenville in the Pirates' final non-league game of the season.
The dominating performance
allowed ECU coach Jeff Lebo to deploy 15 players, building some bench
strength heading into a 16-game Conference USA gauntlet that starts with
a road challenge against perennial powerhouse Memphis on Wednesday. The
Tigers (10-3) closed out their conference slate Friday night with an
85-80 victory at Tennessee.
Kemp got double-figure
scoring support from junior forward Ty Armstrong (14 points), senior
guard Miguel Paul (13 points) and junior guard Akeem Richardson (10
points.)
The Battling Bishops (7-5)
had several leads in the early going and were knotted with ECU at 26-26
with 6:01 left in the first half. That's when Kemp knocked down a jumper
that launched an 18-7 run and sent the Pirates into intermission with a
44-33 lead.
ECU (9-4) added to the
lead in spurts throughout the second half.
Senior forward Brandon
Givens was a force for Wesleyan, scoring 19 points and hauling in 9
rebounds. Junior forward Josh Morrison added 11 points for the Division
III Bishops.
The Pirates' Wednesday
matchup with Memphis is set for an 8 p.m. tipoff at FedExForum with Fox
Sports South televising the game. ECU's first home matchup against a
league foe will come Saturday when Central Florida pays a visit for a 5
p.m. contest that will be carried by WITN-TV 7.
