East Carolina turned
up the defensive pressure in the middle of the second half, forcing
five turnovers over a four-minute span and scoring 15 straight
points to seize the lead and the momentum in a 71-62 victory over
UNC-Greensboro Friday night in the Greensboro Coliseum.
Trailing 52-43 with 10:36
remaining, the Pirates (5-4) unleashed a full-court press that triggered
the reversal in the teams' fortunes. When they flurry of takeaways
subsided and the run culminated on a free throw by freshman guard Paris
Roberts-Campbell at the 6:53 mark, ECU found itself ahead 58-52 and in
charge of the game.
Roberts-Campbell recorded
4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist during the blitz and the
Spartans were unable to pull closer than 4 the rest of the way.
Junior guard Miguel Paul
scored 17 points and senior forward Darrius Morrow and junior forward
Maurice Kemp each had 13 points for the Pirates.
Sophomore forward Trevis
Simpson, who helped UNCG (2-9) build an advantage of as much as 10
points in the first 9 minutes of the second half, led all scorers with
24 points. Junior guard Korey Van Dussen added 11 points and senior
forward Aaron Brackett contributed 10 for the Spartans.
The outcome spoiled the
debut of UNCG interim coach Wes Miller, who was named to the position
after the resignation of ECU alum and two-times Spartans head coach Mike
Dement earlier in the week. Miller, like ECU coach Jeff Lebo, is a
former UNC-Chapel Hill player.
East Carolina led at
the half 28-26.
The Pirates return home
for a Monday night matchup with Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. The 9-1
Chanticleers number among their victims LSU and Clemson.
