Senior catcher Zach Wright's three-run homer
was the first volley in a 13-run barrage over the first three innings that
sent East Carolina to a 13-1 victory over High Point Tuesday night at Clark-LeClair
Stadium.
The Pirates piled on seven runs in the 2nd and
three in the 3rd to essentially put away the win for senior lefthander Kevin
Brandt (7-5), who pitched three hitless innings before handing off to
freshman righthander Dylan Dickens.
Dickens, the first of what would be an ECU
relay team of short-haul relievers, combined with junior southpaw Jake
Harris, freshman righthander Deshorn Lake, senior righthander Lance
Honeycutt and freshman rightie Dario Santangelo to pitch two-hit ball
over the final six frames, keeping the Panthers' ambitions securely in
check.
High point starter Nick
Schumacher (0-1) was roughed up for five runs on three hits and two
walks and took the loss. The senior leftie was credited in the scorebook
with only one inning of work but surrendered a double and a walk to
start the 2nd before junior righthander Matt Armstead began a parade of
five pitchers from the Panthers' bullpen.
The Pirates (33-19-1) banged out 14 hits with
John Wooten leading the way. The junior outfielder/third baseman was
4-for-5, scored a pair of runs and had 2 RBIs. Sophomore shortstop Jack
Reinheimer went 3-for-5, crossed the plate once and had an RBI.
No batter hit safely more than once for High
Point (24-28).
Coming in the final home game of their ECU
careers, the rout served as a grand sendoff for seniors Brandt, Honeycutt,
Wright, Corey Thompson, Mike Ussery and Tim Younger.
East Carolina closes the regular season with games
at Virginia
Military Institute on Friday (2 p.m.) and Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday
(2 p.m.) before heading to Pearl, Mississippi, for next week's Conference
USA Tournament.
