Southern Miss used clutch hitting and
game-saving defensive plays to capture a pair of Sunday victories over East
Carolina, completing a sweep of the teams' weekend series at Pete Taylor
Park.
Blake Brown's two-run double in the bottom of
the seventh wiped out a 3-2 deficit and sent the Golden Eagles (28-22, 12-9
Conference USA) on their way to a 5-3 win in the completion of a contest
that was
halted by rain on Saturday.
Later, in Sunday's regularly scheduled series
finale, Southern Miss centerfielder Dillon Day cut down runners at the plate
in the 8th and 11th innings, preventing ECU from scoring the potential
winning run on each occasion.
Day then delivered a walk-off RBI single in
the bottom of the 12th to seal USM's third triumph over the Pirates
(32-19-1, 13-10-1) in three days. The Golden Eagles eked out a 1-0 win
in an epic
pitcher's duel in Friday's opener.
East Carolina closes its home season against
High Point on Tuesday (6 p.m.) and then hits the road for games with
Virginia Military Institute on Friday (1 p.m.) and Virginia Commonwealth on
Saturday (2 p.m.)
