Tyler DeLoach kept East Carolina baffled and
off-balance for 6 1/3 innings Tuesday night, hog-tying the Pirates on two
hits as UNC-Wilmington built a comfortable lead en route to a 10-1 victory
at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
A junior southpaw, DeLoach (3-2) was a bit
wild but ultimately effective, walking four, hitting four batsmen and
striking out three before turning the sweep-up chores and a 7-1 lead over to
relievers Tom Timoney and Christian MacDonald.
Freshman designated hitter Corey Dick's
three-run homer to right field in the top of the second gave the Seahawks
(21-16) all the runs they needed. Before the night was over, Dick also
reached on a single and a walk and finished with 5 RBIs.
UNCW's 15-hit attack was paced by senior
leftfielder Thomas Pope, who was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and junior
first baseman Hunter Ridge, who was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and a
run scored.
Sophomore designated hitter Drew Reynolds
banged out three singles in five trips to the plate for the 24th-ranked
Pirates.
Jeff Hoffman (1-1) got the start for East
Carolina and was roughed up for six runs on eight hits and a walk before
giving way to a trio of relief pitchers. The freshman righthander, named
Conference USA pitcher of the week on Monday after
a dominating performance at Elon
last week, extended his string of consecutive shutout innings to 20 1/3
before Dick's blast sent three runs across the plate.
East Carolina (25-11-1) hosts William & Mary
(24-15) on Wednesday (6 p.m.) before hitting the road for a
crucial league series against Rice this weekend.
