Memphis banged out 12 hits, including a pair
of home runs, and sophomore lefthander Sam Moll constrained East Carolina's
bats during a solid start as the Tigers squared the weekend series between
the teams with a 5-2 Conference USA victory Saturday afternoon at FedExPark.
Moll (4-3) earned the win, parceling out nine
hits and one walk over 7 1/3 innings before handing off a 4-2 lead to
reliever Jonathan Van Eaton. A sophomore righthander, Van Eaton finished the
job, retiring all five batters he faced and picking up the save.
Sophomore rightfielder Derrick Thomas and
freshman second baseman Tucker Tubbs each had a homer and two RBIs for
Memphis.
The Tigers (16-19, 6-5 C-USA) got to ECU
starter Tyler Joyner (5-1) for four runs on nine hits and a walk in five
innings, dealing the junior southpaw his first defeat of the season. Andy
Smithmyer (2 2/3 innings) and Dylan Dickens (1/3 inning) limited Memphis to
one run on three hits and a walk the rest of the way.
Sophomore shortstop Jack Reinheimer and senior
second baseman Tim Younger each had two hits and an RBI for the Pirates.
East Carolina (24-10-1, 7-3-1)
beat the Tigers 5-2 on Friday. The
decisive game in the series will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
