Senior southpaw Kevin
Brandt outdueled Tyler Johnson, Stony Brook's pitching ace, as East
Carolina eked out a 1-0 victory on Friday at Clark-LeClair Stadium,
ending the Seawolves' nation-leading, 15-game, road winning streak.
Brandt (2-1) got credit for the win after
muffling Stony Brook on four hits while striking out four and walking two
before giving way after eight innings to closer Drew Reynolds.
A freshman righthander, Reynolds gave up a
ninth-inning leadoff single to senior first baseman Pat Cantwell, then
retired the side on a strike out and a double play to pick up his fourth
save of the young season.
Johnson (0-1) went the distance for Stony
Brook, retiring 16 of the first 17 batters he faced. The senior righthander
allowed six hits and walked two.
The Pirates (6-2) finally nicked Johnson for
the game's only run in the sixth. After singles by junior outfielder Philip
Clark and sophomore shortstop Jack Reinheimer, junior outfielder Bryan Bass
walked to load the bases.
Senior third baseman Corey Thompson launched a
sacrifice fly to bring in Clark for the decisive score.
On three occasions, East Carolina turned
double plays to snuff out potential uprisings by the previously unbeaten
Seawolves (4-1).
The teams will play the second in their
three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. instead of at the
originally-scheduled 2 p.m. Inclement weather expected to arrive on Saturday
prompted officials to change the game time.
