Senior southpaw Kevin
Brandt struck out nine through 6 2/3 scoreless innings and sophomore
righthander Drew Reynolds fanned the final batter to put down a
bases-loaded, 9th-inning uprising as East Carolina claimed a 4-0
season-opening victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee Friday afternoon in
Greenville.
Four ECU pitchers combined
to stifle the Panthers on four hits, striking out 13 and giving up only
two walks in the process. The Pirates collected 10 hits, including a
leadoff homer in the first inning by sophomore shortstop Jack
Reinheimer.
Brandt (1-0) picked up the
win and Reynolds got his first career save. UWM starter Eric Semmelhack
(0-1), a junior righthander, took the loss.
Two additional games in
the series originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday have been
consolidated into a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon. Officials
made the schedule adjustment in an effort to get the jump on inclement
weather expected to affect the region later Saturday into Sunday.
