A combination of power
hitting and crafty pitching in game one and a decisive seventh-inning
rally in game two propelled East Carolina to a doubleheader sweep of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday afternoon in Greenville.
The Pirates (3-0) got home
runs from sophomore first baseman Chase McDonald, junior rightfielder
Jay Cannon and sophomore leftfielder Ben Fultz and six innings of
three-hit ball from junior righthander Jharel Cotton (1-0) en route to a
16-1 thumping of the Panthers in the day's first game.
East Carolina trailed 3-1
in the seventh inning of the second game when senior second baseman Tim
Younger brought home the tying runs with a single and senior third
baseman Corey Thompson put the Pirates in front for good with a two-run
double.
Junior southpaw Tyler
Joyner (1-0), who relieved starter Austin Chrismon in the fourth, gave
up one hit over 4 2/3 innings and got credit for the victory. Sophomore
righthander Drew Reynolds came on in the ninth and retired all three
batter to pick up his second save in two days.
The twinbill was played in
lieu of individual games originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Officials made the schedule adjustment to get the jump on inclement
weather that moved into the region later Saturday and was expected to
linger into Sunday.
East Carolina is off until
Wednesday when it will bus to Norfolk for a 3 p.m. matchup with Old
Dominion.
