East Carolina was in position to snatch a Conference USA road win until it went cold from the field and watched UTEP pull away in the closing minutes to a 70-56 victory Wednesday night in El Paso.

The Pirates (9-8, 0-4 C-USA) led on two occasions in the second half and trailed 52-50 with 8:25 left when the shooting woes that have plagued them much of the season struck again.

ECU made only 2 of 12 shots as the clock ticked down — including 0-for-8 from beyond the arc — allowing the Miners (10-9, 3-2) to close the game on an 18-6 run.

John Bohannon was the Pirates' biggest nemesis all night. The sophomore center had 17 points, and his 14 rebounds helped UTEP outrebound ECU 39-19.

Senior forward Gabriel McCulley scored 16 points, freshman forward Julian Washburn had 12 and sophomore guard Michael Perez added 10 for the Miners.

Junior guard Miguel Paul and junior forward Maurice Kemp each scored 14 points and senior forward Darrius Morrow had 12 for the Pirates.

UTEP led at the half 36-32. The score was tied 6 times and there were 6 lead changes.

East Carolina continues its road swing with an 8 p.m. matchup at Houston Saturday night. The Cougars (9-9, 1-4) absorbed a 70-54 loss to Southern Methodist Wednesday night.
