Recruiting battles go
both ways for Pirates
From Bonesville.net staff
reports
East Carolina has lost a
football legacy to Conference USA rival Memphis but the Pirates have
found some new blood close to the home front.
The Daily News Journal of
Murfreesboro, Tenn., has reported that Dave Thomas planned to verbally
commit to Memphis on Monday after a weekend visit to campus, while the
the New Bern Sun Journal has reported that the ECU secondary will be
getting some help from Chris Mattocks of perennial in-state powerhouse
New Bern High School.
Thomas,, Mr. 5-A Football
in Tennessee, guided his Riverdale team to an unbeaten season and a
state title in 2004. He played quarterback, cornerback, punted and also
returned punts. He is reportedly being recruited by the Tigers as a
receiver and a returner.
Thomas' grandfather, Dave,
played an end for the Pirates from 1957-59 and was inducted into the ECU
Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998. Thomas' dad, Dave, was a strong safety
at ECU in 1983-84 and is now an assistant coach at Riverdale High.
Thomas' uncle, Greg, also played at ECU and has coached Greenville Rose
to 4-A state championships the last two years.
Thomas also visited Middle
Tennessee State. He reportedly canceled scheduled visits to Virginia
Tech and ECU. Thomas verbally committed to the ECU staff of John
Thompson prior to the 2004 season.
Mattocks, a 6-0, 180-pound
safety, also has some ties of sorts to East Carolina. His New Bern High
School coach, Chip Williams, played for the Pirates during the era of
legendary former coach Clarence Stasavich, and Mattocks was a teammate
of ECU freshman quarterback Davon Drew during the Bears' back-to-back
runs to the state 4-AA championship games in 2002-03.
A 6-0, 180-pound safety
and two-time member of the Big East 4-A All-Conference team, Mattocks
gave his pledge to Skip Holtz, Thompson's successor, this past weekend.
Verbal commitments are not
binding. National signing day is Feb. 2.
