Freshman guard Trey
Freeman scored 20 points and five of his teammates contributed double
figures as Campbell overcame a 15-point deficit and out-dueled East
Carolina in the game's final minutes to claim a 76-74 victory Monday
night in Buies Creek.
ECU (1-0) established its
15-point margin on two occasions in the first half and led by 13 with
13:13 left in the game before the Camels seized the momentum and
out-scored the Pirates 31-16 down the stretch.
Campbell (2-0) took the
lead 67-65 on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Antonio Kalpic
with 4:23 left.
Over the next 52 seconds,
Freeman converted four opportunities from the free throw line — two as a
result of a technical — and made a steal and a layup to push the Camels
ahead 73-66 at the 3:31 mark.
On the night, Freeman was
12-12 from the free throw line.
ECU battled back and had a
chance to win in the game's final seconds. With the Pirates trailing by
two, freshman guard Paris Roberts-Campbell's 3-point attempt from the
right corner bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
Junior guard Miguel Paul
scored 20 points and dished out 8 assists and sophomore forward Robert
Sampson recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates.
Three players fouled out
for each team.
East Carolina hosts Coker
Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
