Sophomore forward Robert Sampson scored 13
points and junior forward Maurice Kemp had 11 to pace a balanced attack as
East Carolina easily disposed of Conference USA foe Southern Methodist 62-43
Wednesday night in Greenville.
The Pirates went on a 10-0 run midway into the
first half to transform a tie into a 22-12 lead and controlled the momentum
for the rest of the game. Senior forward Darrius Morrow ignited the surge
with a conventional 3-point play and Kemp punctuated the outburst with a
dunk with 5:50 left in the half.
Junior guard Corvonn Gaines nailed a 3-pointer
just before the buzzer to increase East Carolina's halftime advantage to
31-17.
Freshman guard Jalen Jones was SMU's only
double-figure scorer with 11 points. The Mustangs' top offensive threat,
senior forward Robert Nyakundi, did not play in the game.
The Pirates (11-10, 2-6 C-USA) built their
margin to as much as 27 when Sampson hit consecutive 3-pointer in the middle
of the second frame. The second one, with 10:13 left in the game, boosted
the lead to 52-25.
The outcome was influenced by East Carolina's
domination in a couple of key aspects of the game. The Pirates won the
rebound battle 33-22 and seized a huge offensive advantage by making
10-of-28 shots from 3-point range (35.7%). The Mustangs (10-12, 2-6) were
0-for-11 from beyond the arc.
East Carolina will have a chance to earn its
third league win in a row when it hosts Rice on Saturday at 5
p.m. The Owls (13-10, 4-4) are coming off
a 77-75 Wednesday night home
win over Texas-El Paso.
