East Carolina played through a sluggish start and with the help of seven double-figure scorers went on to pummel UNC-Greensboro 97-53 Saturday night in Greenville.

Senior guard Sam Hinnant scored a game-high 18 points and sophomore guard Jontae Sherrod came off the bench to add a career-high 13 points to fuel the 44-point rout, the largest victory margin over a Division I opponent in school history.

Sophomore wing Jamar Abrams, senior guard James Legan, sophomore guard Brock Young and reserve freshman guard Chris Turner each contributed 12 points for the Pirates, while sophomore center Chad Wynn added 10 points.

Young distributed 12 assists and freshman forward Darrius Morrow had 10 rebounds for East Carolina (8-1), which extended its winning streak to five games.

The Spartans (1-6), coached by 1976 ECU grad Mike Dement, were led by junior guard Montel Smith — a Pitt County product — with 11 points.

After a bit of a faltering start, the Pirates gained their bearings and took the lead for good, 18-15, on a Sherrod 3-pointer about 9 minutes into the game.

East Carolina made a sizzling 56.7 percent (34-60) of its field goal attempts, including 51.7 percent (15-29) from 3-point range, while holding UNCG to 30.2 percent (19-63) from the floor and only 19.0 percent (4-21) from behind the arc.

The Pirates will return to action Wednesday in a 7 p.m. game at North Carolina State. The Wolfpack is 5-1 after trouncing Winston-Salem State 74-46 on Saturday.
