Marshall scuttles Pirates

Marshall opened the game
with a 12-0 run and kept East Carolina at bay the rest of the way to
capture a 76-62 Conference USA victory Wednesday night in Greenville.
Senior forward Markel
Humphrey had 24 points and 8 rebounds to help the Thundering Herd claim
the head-to-head tiebreaker in the league race by defeating the Pirates
for the second time this season.
After seizing the big
early advantage, Marshall (13-15, 5-8 C-USA) constructed a 39-28
halftime margin and never allowed East Carolina (13-14, 5-9) to close
the gap to less than 8 points.
Junior guard Chris Lutz
had 15 points and sophomore forward Tirrell Baines and freshman guard
Shaquille Johnson added 12 apiece for the Herd.
Sophomore center Chad Wynn
scored 16 points, freshman forward Darrius Morrow had 15 and senior
guard James Legan added 10 for the Pirates.
The win was Marshall's
first conference road victory of the season. It extended East Carolina's
losing streak to three games.
The Pirates conclude their
home slate Saturday night (7 p.m.) when UAB visits for Senior Night (7
p.m.) Before venturing to Greenville, the Blazers (19-8, 9-3) host
No. 4 Memphis tonight in a matchup set to be televised nationally on
ESPN2 (9 p.m.)
