Pirates streaking in wrong direction

From staff and electronic reports

The three-game winning streak that East Carolina was riding two weeks ago has gone south. The Pirates are now on a three-game skid after Saturday night's 65-52 loss to South Florida in Greenville.

Melvin Buckley scored a game-high 20 points and Solomon Bozeman added 16 to pace the Bulls, who led at the half 28-23.

Junior Darrell Jenkins scored 16 points, freshman John Fields recorded 13 points and 7 blocked shots and senior Courtney Captain contributed 12 points for the Pirates.

As was the case in road losses over the last week to Liberty and UNC-Wilmington, ECU was hindered by poor shooting. The Pirates converted only 19 of 58 from the floor (32.8 percent), 4 of 14 from three-point range (22.7 percent) and 9 of 16 from the free throw line (56.3 percent.)

USF, meanwhile, inflicted substantial damage from behind the arc, connecting on 7 of 14 (50.0 percent.) The Bulls made 20 of 54 field goal attempts overall (37.0 percent) and 18 of 24 from the foul line (75 percent.)

The shooting differential was only part of the statistical deficiency for ECU. South Florida dominated the backboards 51-28.

East Carolina will not return to action until Monday, Dec. 18, when it plays at Morgan State (7 p.m.) The Pirates defeated the Bears 86-67 on Nov. 11 in Greenville.
