East Carolina's first round game against Tulsa in the Conference USA Tournament went like much of ECU's faltering season. The Golden Hurricane was hot and the Pirates were not.

Calvin Walls scored a career-high 15 points and Rod Earls added 13 to lead No. 5 seed Tulsa to a 65-50 victory over 12th-seed ECU in the final game of the tournament's opening round at the FedEx Forum in Memphis.

Senior Courtney Captain's 27 points was the only offensive performance of note for the Pirates, who otherwise had trouble making shots of any variety.

While ECU was struggling — shooting 32.8 percent from the field (19-58), 27.8 percent from behind the arc (5-18) and 43.8 percent from the free throw line (7-16) — Tulsa, in relative terms, was making hay. The Golden Hurricane converted 49 percent of its field goal attempts (25-51), including 46.7 percent from 3-point range (7-15), and made 57.1 percent from the foul line (8-14).

Excluding Captain's 10-of-18 shooting, the Pirates connected on only 22.5 percent from the field (9-40).

Tulsa, which led at the half 34-21, also won the rebounding battle 43-31.

The loss ended a rocky season for ECU, which finished 6-24 and lost 16 of its last 17 games. The Pirates compiled a 2-23 record after starting the season 4-1.

Tulsa, which won its 20th game for the 17th season in school history, will face No. 4 seed Tulane Thursday night (9:30 p.m., CSTV) in a quarterfinal game.
