Meltdown in Minges

From staff and electronic reports

It was a combination of the best of all worlds and the worst of all worlds in Williams Arena on Wednesday night. All the best belonged to Southern Miss and all the worst belonged to East Carolina.

The Golden Eagles (16-8, 6-5 Conference USA) began taking apart the injury-plagued Pirates early and didn't stop the demolition job until the final buzzer in inflicting the worst home basketball beating on ECU (5-19, 0-11 C-USA) since the school was known as East Carolina College.

Jeremy Wise scored 18 points, Andre Stephens added 16 points and Jarvis Hill contributed 12 to pace the 80-42 rout for USM, which shot 56.4 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from three-point range and 68.8 percent from the free throw line.

Senior guard Courtney Captain scored 13 points and junior guard Darrell Jenkins recorded 12 for the offensively-challenged Pirates, who made only 33.3 percent of their field goal attempts, 20 percent of their three-point tries and 40 percent of their free throws.

Without the services of 6-9 freshman forward John Fields, who was sidelined with an injured knee, ECU was out-rebounded 45-21.

The 21 boards represented an all-time record low for the Pirates in Minges Coliseum, and the 38-point pounding was the Pirates' most lopsided home loss since the building — which these days houses Williams Arena — opened in 1965.

Southern Miss led at the half 47-22.

ECU has lost 11 games in a row and 18 of its last 19. The Pirates' last victory came on Jan. 6 over Chowan.

East Carolina's next shot at halting the skid will come Saturday night when it visits league foe Southern Methodist (8:05 p.m.)
