Cougars cancel out Jenkins' heroics

From staff and electronic reports

East Carolina's one-man show was no match for Houston's more balanced effort Saturday night as the Cougars chewed up the Pirates and claimed an 83-59 Conference USA victory.

ECU senior guard Darrell Jenkins' deft shooting performance resulting in 31 points barely fazed Houston, which bolted to a 10-0 lead in the game's first three and half minutes and virtually removed all doubt about the outcome by building a 44-20 halftime lead.

Junior guard Robert McKiver scored 23 points, senior forward Jahmar Thorpe tallied 15 points and junior forward Dion Dowell added 11 points for the Cougars.

Jenkins made 10 of his 13 shots — including eight of 10 from beyond the three-point line — and three of four free throws to score more than half of East Carolina's points on a night when his teammates experienced great collective difficulty finding the basket.

Excluding Jenkins shooting exhibition, the Pirates made only 23.7 percent of their shots from the field (9-of-38), 21.1 percent from behind the arc (4-of-19) and 46.2 percent from the charity stripe (6-of-13) in absorbing their 10th loss in a row and the 17th in their last 18 games.

Junior guard Jeremy Ingram was ECU's second-leading scorer with 6 points.

Houston converted 44.1 percent of its field goal attempts (26-of-59), 33.3 percent from three-point range (12-of-36) and 86.4 percent from the free throw line (19-of-22)

The Cougars improved to 13-10 overall, 7-3 in C-USA, while ECU dropped to 5-18 in all games, 0-10 in the league. The Pirates' last victory came on Jan. 6 over Chowan.

East Carolina's next shot at halting its skid will come Wednesday when it hosts Southern Mississippi (7 p.m.)
