Pirates fade late at Tulsa

East Carolina traded blow
for blow with host Tulsa Wednesday night until the heavily-favored
Golden Hurricane spurted away late in the second half for a 67-49
victory in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
Guard Rod Earls was the
principle catalyst for Tulsa (11-3, 1-0 Conference USA,) converting 7 of
9 from 3-point range and scoring 25 points.
Earls' backcourt mates, Brett McDade and Ben Uzoh, contributed double figures as well, recording 12
and 10 points, respectively. McDade also dished out 8
assists.
Junior guard Darrell
Jenkins scored 15 points and was the only Pirate in double figures.
Junior guards Jeremy Ingram and Cory Farmer added 9 and 8 points,
respectively.
ECU freshman forward Gabe
Blair scored 6 points and hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Pirates (5-9, 0-1)
trailed 33-32 at the half and had knotted the score at 42-42 in the
second frame when a short jumper by Tulsa's Charles Ramsdell ignited a
12-2 run that gave the Golden Hurricane command at 54-44 with seven
minutes left.
East Carolina now returns
home for a league battle with Rice on Saturday (7:00 p.m., WITN-TV 7.)
