NORFOLK — A four-run first inning sparked host Old
Dominion to a 9-5 Conference USA win over East Carolina on Saturday.
Nick Walker got the Monarchs (22-14, 10-7 C-USA) started
in the bottom of the first with a double down the right field line. Ben
Slaton, Josiah Burney, Jordan Negrini and Connor Myers had singles in the
opening frame for ODU.
ECU left-hander Reid Love (2-3) faced six batters in the
first without recording an out. Only two of the four runs allowed by Love
were earned.
Tyler Bolton pitched five and two-thirds innings. He
yielded four hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out five.
The Monarchs added another four-run frame in the seventh
after ECU closed within 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the frame.
A bases-loaded walk to Kirk Morgan got the Pirates on the
board following singles by Bryce Harman, Charlie Yorgen and Garrett Brooks
in the seventh.
ODU added four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Dylan Brown had three hits, a run scored and an RBI for
the Pirates. Harman went 3-for-3.
The Pirates (20-15, 8-6 C-USA) will try to avoid being
swept in game three of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. David Lucroy is
scheduled to start for ECU.
