Rams pummel East Carolina

Virginia Commonwealth busted open a 6-6 tie with a
six-run sixth inning and coasted to an 18-11 victory over East Carolina on
Tuesday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Freshman lefthander Heath Dwyer (2-0) came on in
relief for VCU starter Seth Cutler-Voltz in the second inning and picked up
the victory. Dwyer surrendered six hits and three runs over 6 1/3 innings.
On a positive note for the Pirates, junior southpaw
Jake Harris started the game, his first action in almost a year after
undergoing Tommy John surgery. Harris gave up five runs and five hits before
giving way after a predetermined stint on the mound to a parade of relief
pitchers.
The contest was anything but a crisp affair as VCU
outhit the Pirates 18-16. ECU's hurlers issued nine walks and hit five
batters.
East Carolina's offensive highlight was a two-run
homer by senior catcher Zach Wright in the bottom of the first that helped
the Pirates add to an early lead.
ECU used 27 players in the game, including 10
pitchers. Sixteen VCU players saw action, four of them pitchers.
Next up for the Pirates is a three-game home series
with Penn State. The teams will play on Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.)
and Sunday (1 p.m.).
