Pirates bombard Devils
again
From staff reports
GREENVILLE — A day after
being named
Conference USA hitter of the week, East Carolina's Jake Smith had a
career high six RBI's as the Pirates dominated Duke for a 17-4 win at
Clark-LeClair Stadium on Tuesday.
Smith had a grand slam in
the fourth inning, his third home run of the season.
ECU (8-3) had
battered the
Blue Devils 19-5 just a week earlier.
Smith had plenty of
offensive company in a 12-hit attack for the Pirates. Brandon Henderson
was 2-for-2 with a double, his first college homer, three RBI's and two
runs scored — all in the eighth inning when he came in as a
pinch-hitter.
Jay Mattox was 2-for-3
with an RBI and a career-best four runs scored. Harrison Eldridge also
finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs. Stephen Batts went 2-for-4
with two RBI's.
Chris Buss tripled in an
eighth-inning pinch-hit appearance, driving in two of ECU's nine runs in
the frame.
Brody Taylor was the
beneficiary of the run support, picking up his first win since the 2004
season. Taylor tossed five shutout innings in his first start of the
year. The senior left-hander gave up just four hits while walking two
and striking out six.
Mike Flye, Josh Dowdy and
Michael Hill combined to check the Devils over the final four innings.
Duke starter Jim Perry
took the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits and
three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Brett Bartles and Anderson
each finished with three hits to lead Duke (4-7).
The Pirates didn't waste
any time getting ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Smith's
double to right-center scored Mattox before Batts' RBI single to center
brought in Smith two batters later.
East Carolina will host
Stony Brook in a three-game set this weekend. The only meeting between
the two came in 2004 when the Pirates
beat the Seawolves 8-2 in the Kinston regional of the NCAA
Tournament.
