KLC day two: Bucs batter
Seahawks
From staff reports
East Carolina's second
game in the 2006 Keith LeClair Classic drew 4,141 to Clark-LeClair
Stadium and the Pirates responded to the fan support by defeating UNC-Wilmington
11-2 at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday.
The throng saw Jake Smith
go 3-for-5 with four RBI's to help ECU move its record to 7-2. Smith's
sacrifice fly with two out in the bottom of the 9th on Friday lifted the
Pirates to a 4-3 win over Penn State in ECU's opening game in the third
annual event that honors the former Pirates baseball coach stricken with
Lou Gehrig's disease.
ECU didn't require any
late game heroics on Saturday. Two runs in the first put the Pirates
ahead to stay and they continued a productive offensive afternoon with
three runs in the fourth, one in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Dale Mollenhauer had his
best performance of the young season, going 2-for-4 with three RBI's and
two runs scored. Jake Dean and Harrison Eldridge each finished 2-for-3.
Eldridge and Drew Schieber also scored two runs apiece.
Mollenhauer gave the
Pirates a three-run lead with a two-RBI triple to right-center in the
fourth. Smith clouted a solo homer, his second round tripper of the
season, in the seventh for a 6-2 ECU lead. The Pirates blew the game
open in the eighth with five runs on four hits and two UNCW errors.
In his third start of the
season, Dustin Sasser went 5 2/3 innings before giving way to Chris
Powell. Sasser (2-1) allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out
one and walking three. Jason Neitz and Kevin Rhodes combined to throw
the final three innings of scoreless ball.
UNCW fell to 6-2. Allen
Flood (1-1) took the loss, as he started and lasted 3 2/3 innings.
Michael Mabry had two of UNCW's nine hits.
N.C. State prevailed 3-2
over Penn State and West Virginia took a 4-0 win over Virginia Tech in
other Classic contests on Saturday.
ECU will play this
afternoon at 1 p.m. against Virginia Tech. West Virginia and Penn State
begin today's play at 10 a.m. The NCSU-UNCW matchup is scheduled to
close the Classic at 4 p.m.
