C-USA knocking on Temple’s door
Bonesville.net Staff Report
©2003 Bonesville.net Conference USA has commitments from Rice,
Southern Methodist and Tulsa for membership in 2005. Marshall appears ready
to move to C-USA as well, but Central Florida may not be the program that
puts the league at 12 teams to enable division play and a conference
championship game in football.
A source indicated on Thursday that C-USA may turn to Temple as Central
Florida entertains the possibility of football-only status in the Big East.
Temple has played football in the Big East and basketball in the Atlantic
10. The Owls would bring the Philadelphia market to C-USA, and the location
would be a drivable trip for ECU fans.
The Big East is expected to officially take Louisville, Cincinnati, South
Florida, DePaul and Marquette from C-USA with a vote on Nov. 4 at a meeting
of the presidents of its institutions in Philadelphia. C-USA has proactively
sought to replace the departing members to cushion the impact of their
departure.
There are reports that C-USA will also lose non-football members
Charlotte and Saint Louis to the A-10.
